South Africa Men’s Cricket Team History

History of the South African Men’s Cricket Team

After England and Australia, South Africa was the third nation to play international cricket, in 1889. It didn’t fare too well on the first outings; it took 17 years before they could win a Test and almost 70 until winning was considered usual. The mid to late 1960s when Graeme Pollock, Eddie Barlow, Mike Procter, and Ali Bacher ruled the roost, marked the first golden age, albeit excluded from the South African majority population.

Apartheid has kept South Africa off the global sporting scene for two decades; the nation last competed in cricket back in 1991, when cricket had already expanded and changed within the purview of white-ball cricket. The organization rapidly established itself as a force in the shorter formats of the game, with five semi-final and two semi-final appearances in ODI World Cups and T20 World Cups, respectively, yet it has no victory to show in either format.

Strong Fast-Bowling Of South Africa

They always had a strong base in fast bowling – Shaun Pollock to Dale Steyn and then Kagiso Rabada. In the twenty-first century, they brought forth a batter who revolutionized the game with his 360-degree style of strokeplay: AB de Villiers.

On-field achievement was marred against the backdrop of administrative chaos that lasted throughout the 2000s. By late 2010s and most parts of the 2020s, CSA went through several tossing CEOs, and a painful Social Justice and Nation-Building process, to better understand the effects of prejudgment and discrimination on the game. A target system remains in place in order to achieve a more representative team.
